Gardening with your kids

For Earth day the kids and I decided to plant our veggies for the summer! It was GREAT fun! Last year was our first year growing our own veggies and we learned a lot. We learned that weeding is VERY important, we learned that the deer will not leave our garden alone without a little electricity (insert evil snicker here) and we learned that we did not plant ENOUGH of anything.
This year we decided to add a few more (OK actually 24 more) crowns of asparagus to our crop. This time next year we will have asparagus coming out of our ears and I cannot wait (and neither can my kids)! We just finished planting three varieties of lettuce, radishes, onions, red potatoes, green beans and peas....and to top it all off we have room left over for a few tomato plants! I am....oops I mean the kids are, SO excited!

Gardening with my kids last year changed the way they looked at vegetables. They actually enjoy them now. There is something magical about plopping a few seeds into the dirt, watering, watching it grow and picking them! For some reason it makes vegetables delightful and delectable to kids. Go figure! (Now if I can just somehow figure out a trick to bed making!)

The point of this post is just to encourage you to try gardening with your kids. Even if you don't have an acre of yard to give up or you live in the city where grass is few and far between it is still possible. Try something simple like planting herbs in a pot. If you do have the space go all out! My kids where just chomping at the bit to get started! Can't wait to see what this year's crop gives us!

  1. How fun!! We have been planning our garden as well. I think we bought enough seeds (Hazel kept wanting different ones) to plant both our garden and my father's. I would love it if you would share at our new link party--Happy Family Times. A link party that is meant to help inspire us all to have more family times. http://craftymomsshare.blogspot.com/2012/04/happy-family-times-5.html Thank you!!
