Decorating your staircase for the holidays

how to decorate my staircase for Christmas
Blah! Look at that icky, blah, boring staircase. I kept thinking good golly (yes, I say good golly) that is one sad looking staircase. I pulled together some of the tips I had learned about decorating from my mom and a few that I came up with too and got straight to work.

Alright, looking a little better, right? The pretty greens add some much needed color. I found these at Michael's Craft Store for $4.99. (They wanted $24.99 for the ones with colors, decor, and bulbs on them). These were plain old green garland bunches. Nothing snazzy at all. I walked through the store and found a package of red glittery balls in the dollar area. Yup, an additional dollar and a hot glue gun later and I have pretty red and green garland for my stair case. Now, you may be asking- I thought this blog was about fun things to do with your kid. It is- hold your horses! My 5 year old son helped me decorate the greens. I pulled out my LOW temp glue gun and let him slobber the glittery balls up with glue and smoosh them onto the garland. (You just didn't see it because I forgot to take a photo- oops)

OK for those who noticed the fact that those three photos are crooked on my wall- plfffffffffffff (that's me sticking my tongue out at you). I know, I know...I didn't notice they were all kiddy wompass until I snapped the photo. These were another GREAT and EASY find. Dollar store to the rescue! Three dollars for all three frames and another dollar for the Christmas picks (those things I glued into them). I had some scrap material left over from another project and I cut them each to the 5x7 size of the frame and put them into the frame.  Then I let my son glue in the picks (his choices). They are a great 3D look too! Very festive if you ask me! And here is a close up so you can see exactly what I am talking about.

My favorite song for Christmas is "Silent Night" and I thought it would look really neat on the risers of my stairs. If you don't have a die cut machine (like I do) you can easily find people online to cut out the words to a song or a verse or a saying out of vinyl. I am SO happy with the way they turned out (and to be honest- they were the most expensive part $20, but well worth it to me). I let my son "supervise" this part because I wanted to make sure they were straight and applied correctly. I added a few holiday tins to the side of the stairs and a couple of stockings for a color pop!

To complete the look I added a few of my favorite Christmas finds from over the years (a jolly Santa, a Nativity scene, some glittery letters (Let it snow) and some pretty boxes to top it all off.

  10. That is an amazing idea. And while I know this is just for a Christmas idea you could also do it for a bit of romance. Maybe put some loving message to your partner going up the stairs to the bedroom.
