Make fun of cleaning

toddler cleaning
I've mentioned my grandma a few times before and how she was creative, clever, and fun. I have so many amazing memories of the "little things" in life that she turned into great things. Not long ago she passed away and while the pain of losing her is still raw I know that I am so lucky because I have so many wonderful memories to last me a lifetime.

One thing that she made fun was cleaning. Yes, you read the right, cleaning! She loved to sew and she had sewn me an apron that she kept in the top drawer in her kitchen (right next to her towels). On Sundays we'd get up and she'd open the kitchen drawer and pull out my little apron and tie it on. It's amazing to me that a simple apron made cleaning fun. I thought it would be really neat to "pass on the cleaning fun" to my daughter. I made her a special cleaning apron that I now keep in my top drawer in my kitchen right next to the one my grandma made for me.

When it is time to get some cleaning done I try and make a game or a race out of it. I hand my daughter a duster and tell her "hey let's race and see who can dust off the most window sills or heat registers." I set a timer for 10 minutes and then we go for it.

The point of this post is two fold really. First, I wanted to encourage you to make "fun of the little things" in life and second to remember that daunting tasks can be fun if you make a game out of it. I hope you will share some of your stories with us too!

Fun Stuff Fridays #6

Welcome to Fun Stuff Fridays!  Wanna know more about our linky? Click on "Fun Stuff Fridays" above, then "about".  It takes us a while to go through each entry and narrow it down to our top three. We wish we could feature all of them!  Can't wait to see your amazing submissions this week!  Feel free to submit as many ideas as you want over that time.  And remember- spread the word!

Our joint favorite pick was the DIY Fort Kit submitted by Happy Little Messes. If we're being completely honest this fort kit is great for kids.....and MOMS!!! Jamie's girls love forts and so do Lindsi's kids, we're adding this to our "to do in 2012" list for sure.

Jamie's number one pick was New Year's Interview with the Kiddos submitted by Keeping it Plain and Simple. Such a cute, fun, great and creative way to create a keepsake for you and your kids through out the years.

Lindsi's favorite pick from this past week was Valentines Pillow Boxes submitted by Bellaraevintage.  What an adorable way to present a Valentine to your sweetie! My kids would give me the thumbs up for sure if I put these together for them.

Paper Mache Maracas...FAIL

Ok, the third, and hopefully the last, fail post (for a very long time) of the week...

Christmas break and, once again, my girls were bored.  What can we do with things I have lying around the house?  (Insert--me: search, girls: "no", me: search, girls: "no", me: search, girls: "no", finally...)  "How about paper mache maracas?"  "YES!!"

Before I go on...I am not going to tell you how to make the maracas in this post.  I'll save that for when we can re-make them and they turn out...now let's continue...

I knew we had flour, water and newspaper in the house, and I thought for sure we had some left over water balloons lying around.  After looking all over the place, I could NOT find the balloons.  I've got my girls all psyched up for these maracas and now we can't make them...what to do...?  Hmmm...how about a sandwich bag?  I'll just blow air into it, twist the top so the air can't get out, and tie it off with a twisty tie...  Good idea, in theory (mistake #1).

My girls had a ton of fun playing in the paste (mistake #2) and wrapping their sandwich bags in newspaper.  See the paste dots in the photo below?  Take that x20.  That's what our table looked like when they were done.  Next time I'll put some newspaper or plastic over the table before we start.

Besides the mess, so far, so good, right?  The sandwich bags were wrapped, they were holding their air, all looked good, and we set our maracas on the table to dry over night.

The next morning, the maracas were mostly dry.  The girls were excited but I told them they had to wait until they dried completely before we could move on to the next steps.  We left them on the table to finish drying (mistake #3).

I was in the shower and suddenly heard some loud screaming and yelling.  I got out and yelled at the girls for screaming.  Tottie yelled back at me, "TJ!...My maraca!"  Oh, great...downstairs on the floor I discovered what the yelling was all about.  The dog thought the maraca was a chew toy...

At first, it looked as though the maraca might be ok.  On closer inspection...holes...lots of holes...Though the back side looked intact...

We still had one maraca intact at this point in time.  We must continue this project!

Remember mistake #1 up there?...Using a sandwich bag instead of a balloon?....Yeah, this is what happened when I untied the twisty tie...a MUCH larger hole than I wanted....

And this is what happened when I tried to pull the sandwich bag out of the paper mache...

You see, the sandwich bag bag wasn't taut like a balloon.  It had creases in it when we paper mached over it.  I didn't think that the creases would end up in the paper mache vs simply sliding smoothly out.  So much for our maracas.  Let's clean up...

In anticipation of adding a second layer of paper mache to our maracas the next day, I had put our paste in the fridge over night.  Obviously we are not going to try making these again any time soon, so I needed to discard the left over paste.  I knew enough not to put the paste down the drain because it was a potential drain clogger.  I thought I would pour the paste into a plastic bag and then put it in the garbage...I just didn't check the bag for holes before I poured the paste into it (mistake #4)...

Yep, there you have it...my complete FAILURE at making paper mache maracas with my girls.  We lived, I learned, and we'll try again...

Borax Crystal Snowflakes...FAIL

I have no idea why this week turned out to be a FAIL week for our projects but sometimes life just is that way. We promised to share our failures along side our successes. So here is another FAIL.

This is what you SHOULD end up with

This is what I got
borax snowflakes

What I did wrong---I estimated rather than measured

Here is what you will need
measuring cup and spoon
Borax 20 mule team
bowl (pint size)
boiling water
pencil
string
pipe cleaner
food coloring (optional)

Cut a pipe cleaner into three equal parts and twist together
borax snowflakes
Attach string to each snowflake and hang using a pencil, make sure they do not touch the side or the bottom of the jar
borax snowflakes
Fill the jar with 1 pint of boiling water and carefully MEASURE 3 tablespoons of borax and stir until disolved. (you may add a drop or two of food coloring at this point). Set them aside for 24 hours and when you come back to them you WILL have pretty crystal snowflakes.

Just in case you are wondering, I have done this before and it did work. It was a FAVORITE of mine as a kid. I guess my babysitter knew the importance of measuring =)

So- have you done this? Let's see your photos!

Tortilla Chip Snowflakes...FAIL

I labeled this "tasty treats" because NORMALLY it IS a tasty treat but when you get distracted and side tracked they burn in the oven and then they are no longer tasty =)

Making your own tortilla chips is REALLY easy and they taste amazing (most of the time).
Here is what you will need
tortillas
cooking spray
sugar
baking sheet
oven
scissors

I used a circular cookie cutter to cut the tortillas into smaller circles first (if you get the burrito size you can get quite a few smaller circles from each one)
make your own tortilla chips
Once you have the amount of circles you desire fold them in half and start snipping pieces out (much like you do when you make paper snowflakes)
make your own tortilla chips
Place them on a baking sheet and spray lightly with cooking spray
make your own tortilla chips
Bake at 350degrees F for 7 minutes (NOT 20 like I did...LOL). Then sprinkle with sugar once you remove them. ENJOY!
make your own tortilla chips
Here is how they are supposed to look (this was the only one that wasn't burned to a crispy black dirt flake)
*just a little funny thing to share----I was so mad when I realized I burned them that I tossed them out in disgust and didn't snap a photo*
